While sound can reveal a lot, it often is dismissed as a tool for knowledge and data points for its ephemeral, temporal and contingent nature. To better understand the overwhelmingly characteristic soundscape of my new home in the Skid Row neighborhood of Downtown L.A. (a ground zero of homelessness), I set out to record the sound from my window and engage in an idiosyncratic scene analysis to capture the sonic experience and what my neighbors in the streets are exposed to. As the tallest building of California is underway and emerges high in the skyline just a few blocks away, the vibrant streets of 6th and San Pedro sound out life, death and much in between.
